Welcome to Todd's Sandbox

My name is Todd Humphrey. I use this web site to demonstrate my web design abilities and to try new ideas in a real world situation. I am skilled in Accessibility, CSS techniques, SEO, XHTML, working with java script, and validation. I also use ASP and you may see some .Net within the site. I am seeking employment as a web designer. If you are interested in hiring me, or if you just need help with a project, please contact me at 360-855-0055, or use the contact page to reach me. I will also consider helping any non-profit organization with FREE web design services. If your organization needs help, please feel free to contact me.

Education

I recently received my AA degree in Computer Information Systems from Herzing College. Over the last six years I have added to my web design and networking skills through a combination of schooling and good ole' trial and error. Building my own sites for personal use and family has also provided me opportunities to expand my skills.

My philosophy

My philosophy on web design is simple. I think web sites are first and foremost a means to provide information. A web site that is hard to find, or hard to use, serves no really useful purpose.

I am picky about my web sites passing code validation and meeting accessibility standards. This site is full of accessibility features, some you might have not seen before, some you have. The practicable application of accessibility features are a struggle for some web developers. They may see accessibility as more of a nuisance than a design requirement. Through out this web site I plan to add as much varied content type as I can and still meet accessibility standards. If users cannot find your web site through search engine results, or easily navigate the site then you, and the user lose. Sites that provide information to the public should be as accessible as possible by following Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the W3C 2.0 accessibility recommendations.

Software

I have used Dreamweaver and Fireworks since version 3. I am now using DW CS3 with Fireworks 8. I also use Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3. I use Visual Studio 2005 for .Net and working with database development, although I will admit my database abilities are not well developed yet.

Web Site Styles

This web site uses a liquid design. To accommodate screen resolutions from 800px wide and higher, I used a container DIV set to 95%. The border will expand to accommodate the browser window size by expanding itself like a slide ruler. The top banner is split into two sections, left and right which are floated left and right. When the width of the window exceeds the combined width of the two images, a DIV set behind the images uses a background-image value to fill in the growing gap. This method is used for both the top and bottom borders.

I am not a fan of frames or 100% Flash web sites. Frames and Flash have their place in modern web design, however I prefer XHTML and CSS for page layout and content presentation.

If you have a web that you need built, please consider me.
